Complete Streets

Complete Streets provide safe and accessible options for all travel modes - walking, biking, transit, and vehicles - for people of all ages and abilities.

Deerfield has been advancing Complete Streets and Neighborhoods initiatives since 2012. In 2019, we adopted a Complete Streets Policy and Prioritization Plan to qualify for additional grants like the Elm Street Project and to guide ongoing improvements throughout Town.

Elm Street Project 2024-2026

We’re reimagining Elm Street—and it’s going to be safer, accessible, and vibrant! Elm Street, the main route through downtown South Deerfield, is a dense, walkable, mixed-use corridor full of small businesses, homes, and the beloved Town Common. Our Town successfully completed a new municipal parking lot ("Leary Lot") with EV chargers and a small picnic area connecting to Elm Street and North Main Street in the Fall of 2024. We were recently awarded a $500,000 Complete Streets grant for shared-use pathways, reconfigured street parking, safer crosswalks, and beautification on Elm Street.Updates: Winter 2025/2026 - The Town was awarded the $1-million request from the STRI grant! We are currently working through the new grant contract with the state, coordinating with utility providers, and will begin additional community outreach sessions - please sign up for the mailing list below or reach out to the Town Planning and Economic Development Coordinator for the most current updates. Summer 2025 - The Town applied for a $1 million grant from the Small-Town Rural Improvements (STRI) to Enhance Public Safety fund to extend improvements to the sidewalk connecting to the Municipal Parking Lot along North Main Street and enhancing the intersection at Elm, Main, and Sugarloaf Streets.PROJECT GOALS:
  • Better Stormwater Drainage - The road will be reshaped to guide stormwater into new drains, keeping sidewalks and streets drier and safer.
  • Elevated Crosswalk - A new raised crosswalk near the Municipal Parking Lot will make crossing easier and more visible to drivers.
  • Multimodal Infrastructure - A 10' Shared path for cyclists and pedestrians, with a landscaping buffer on the North side of Elm Street.
  • Refreshed Sidewalk - The south side sidewalk will be completely redone - similar layout with level surfacing.
